Stump Grinding & Removal

Stump Grinding in the Niagara Region, ON

Old stumps ground out below the surface so you can reseed, replant or just mow straight across.

Grind the Stump, Get the Yard Back

A stump is the part of a tree removal people tend to put off, and then live with for years. It catches the mower, sprouts suckers, rots slowly and gives carpenter ants a home. Stump grinding gets rid of it in an hour or two. A grinder chews the stump down below the soil into a pile of wood chips, and the spot can be filled, seeded or planted. We grind fresh stumps right after a removal and old ones that have been sitting in the lawn for a decade, anywhere in the Niagara Region. Call (289) 672-1630 for a quote.

You'll know before we start how deep we'll grind, what happens to the chips and what the spot will look like when we leave.

What's Included

Grinding Below Grade

The stump ground down below the soil surface, with the depth written on your quote. Going deeper is possible when you're planning to plant or build on the spot.

Surface Roots

Roots running across the lawn near the stump ground out too, so they don't trip you or the mower.

Chip Cleanup or Mulch

The chips raked up and hauled away, used to fill the hole, or left in a pile for your garden beds, whichever you prefer.

Backfill and Topsoil

The hole filled with topsoil and levelled, ready for seed or sod.

Old Stumps

Stumps from removals years ago, including half-rotted ones and stumps someone else left behind.

Tight Access

A compact grinder that fits through most backyard gates. We'll ask for the gate width when you call so we bring the right machine.

Grinding or Full Stump Removal?

Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root system, leaving the deeper roots to rot away naturally. It's quick, tidy and the right choice for nearly every yard.

Full removal means digging out the whole root ball, usually with an excavator. It leaves a large hole and a lot of disturbed ground, so it's only worth it when you're building a foundation, pouring a patio or putting a pool exactly where the tree stood.

What about the roots? Once the stump is ground, the remaining roots can't grow. A few species, like poplar, Manitoba maple, sumac and tree-of-heaven, may send up suckers from the old roots for a season or two. Mowing or cutting them off usually ends it.

Before we grind. We call for utility locates through Ontario One Call, because gas lines, cables and irrigation pipes often run closer to a stump than you'd expect.

What Does Stump Grinding Cost?

JobTypical range
Small stump$150 – $300
Medium stump$250 – $450
Large stump$400 – $600
Each extra stump, same visitLess than the first

Typical ranges from Niagara-area pricing guides ($150 to $600 per stump). Very large stumps, stumps with exposed surface roots, poor access and hauling all the chips away add to the price. Grinding several stumps on one visit brings the cost per stump down.

Stump Grinding Questions

How deep do you grind?

Deep enough for grass to grow over the spot, and deeper if you plan to plant a tree or shrub there. The depth is written on your quote so there's no guesswork.

Can I plant where the stump was?

Yes, once the chips are cleared out and replaced with good soil. Grass can go in right away; for a new tree, plant a little to one side of the old stump so the roots aren't fighting old wood.

What happens to the chips?

Your choice: we can haul them away, use them to fill the hole, or leave them in a pile for mulch.

Tired of Mowing Around It?
