Tree Pruning in Grimsby, ON

Pruning for trees that live between Lake Ontario and the escarpment, from Grimsby Beach to the brow.

Tree Pruning for Grimsby Properties

Grimsby is squeezed between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, and its trees live with weather from both. Lake storms blow in from the north, cold air pours down off the brow on still nights, and gusts funnel through the gaps in the escarpment face. Mature maples and oaks along the older streets, and the cottage-era trees around Grimsby Beach, need their deadwood out and their crowns kept light enough to handle it. Tree Service Niagara prunes them properly. Call (289) 672-1630 to book a free visit.

Trees in Grimsby

Up the slope, the woods of Beamer Memorial Conservation Area cling to the escarpment edge, and many properties below back onto wooded slopes of their own. Down by the lake, Grimsby Beach's narrow streets of old cottages are shaded by trees planted a century ago, often within a metre or two of the houses. In between are newer neighbourhoods with lindens, maples and ornamental pears that need structural pruning while they're still young. And this is fruit country: plenty of Grimsby yards still have a peach, cherry or apple tree left over from the orchard days, which do best with a dormant-season prune each winter.

The Local Rule

Grimsby has delegated small-woodland protection to the Region, so trees that form part of a woodland, including smaller wooded slopes, may be regulated on private land. Maintenance pruning doesn't count as injuring a tree under that by-law, and dead or hazardous trees are exempt from it. Trees on Town property belong to the Town. We check before any removal.

Grimsby Tree Questions

My lot backs onto the escarpment woods. Can I cut trees there?

You can usually prune them, but removing trees on a wooded slope may need a permit, because Grimsby's smaller woodlands are covered by the Regional by-law. Talk to us first and we'll find out.

When should I prune my peach and cherry trees?

Late in the dormant season, usually March, once the worst cold has passed. Stone fruit is more easily damaged by winter cuts than apples and pears, so it's done last.
