Tree Pruning in St. Catharines, ON
Careful pruning for the Garden City's big old maples, oaks and backyard fruit trees.
Tree Pruning for St. Catharines Properties
They don't call St. Catharines the Garden City for nothing. Older neighbourhoods around Montebello Park, the downtown and the streets running down to the canal are shaded by maples, oaks, lindens and honey locusts planted generations ago, and many of those trees have grown far bigger than the yards they stand in. Tree Service Niagara prunes them to keep them healthy and keep their branches off your roof, with cuts made where the tree can seal them. Call (289) 672-1630 for a free look at your trees.
Every job starts with a visit. We look at the tree's health and structure, check whether it's yours or the City's, and give you a written quote listing what we'll cut and why.
Trees in St. Catharines
Big, ageing trees are the story here. Silver maples planted for quick shade in the post-war subdivisions now tower over houses, and their brittle wood and tight forks are prone to splitting in ice storms. Norway maples line many older streets. Along Martindale Pond, the Henley rowing course, and down through the Twelve Mile Creek valley, private yards back onto woodlands and ravines. Pruning out deadwood and thinning heavy crowns is the most useful work most of these trees can get.
Ash trees were common too, and emerald ash borer has killed most of them. The City removed thousands of ash from its own streets and parks, but plenty of dead ash still stand in backyards. They become more brittle every year. Dead tree removal.
The Local Rule
St. Catharines protects City-owned trees under By-law 2017-326. Injuring or removing a City tree without a permit carries a minimum fine of $1,000, and residents may not trim City trees in front of or behind their homes. Private trees can also fall under the Region's woodland by-law if they're part of a woodland, because St. Catharines has handed small-woodland protection to the Region. We check before we cut.

Emergency Tree Removal →St. Catharines Tree Questions
Can I trim the City tree in front of my house?
No. Boulevard trees belong to the City, and only City crews or contractors may prune or remove them. If a City tree needs attention, call Citizens First at 905-688-5600. We can prune any trees on your side of the property line.
My backyard joins a ravine. Can I prune those trees?
Usually, yes. The Regional woodland by-law doesn't count maintenance pruning as injuring a tree. Removing trees in a wooded ravine is different, so we'll check whether the area counts as a regulated woodland before quoting any removal.
