Tree Pruning in Niagara Falls, ON

Proper pruning for big residential trees away from the tourist strip, with oaks done in winter.

Tree Pruning for Niagara Falls Properties

Away from the tourist strip, Niagara Falls is a city of quiet residential streets and big, old trees: maples and oaks in the older north end, lindens and honey locusts in the newer subdivisions and mature woodlots along the river and the hydro corridors. Wind funnels up the gorge and across open ground from the river, which puts heavy crowns and weak forks under real strain. Tree Service Niagara prunes those trees so they hold up. Trees in Niagara Falls

The Niagara Glen, down in the gorge, is one of the richest pieces of Carolinian forest in Ontario, and the same mix of oaks, hickories and maples turns up in yards across the city. Oaks deserve special care here. In 2023, Niagara Falls became the first place in Canada where oak wilt was confirmed, and the fungus can kill a red oak in a matter of weeks. Federal inspectors ask homeowners to leave oaks uncut from April to the end of November, because fresh wounds draw in the sap beetles that carry it. Our oak work is booked for winter, and if one is already wilting, we'll tell you what to watch for and who to report it to. Arborist assessments.

Ash was once common on Niagara Falls streets too, and emerald ash borer has killed most of it. Dead ash still standing in yards should come down before they come down on their own.

The Local Rule

The City's tree by-law (2004-173) protects trees on public property, so boulevard trees are the City's to prune or remove. Niagara Falls has also delegated small-woodland protection to the Region, so trees that are part of a woodland may be regulated even on private land. Ordinary pruning isn't affected.

Niagara Falls Tree Questions

I have an oak with leaves turning brown in summer. What should I do?

Don't prune it, and don't move its wood or firewood. Browning that starts at the leaf edges and works inward, combined with early leaf drop, can be a sign of oak wilt. Call us for an arborist look. You can also report a suspected case to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Can you prune the City tree on my boulevard?

No. Trees on public property in Niagara Falls are the City's responsibility. Call the City about those, and we'll take care of the trees on your property.
